English/History Test

Citizenship Test in San Jose

Preparing for the English & U.S. History Test

If you are planning to apply for citizenship, you likely know that one part of the naturalization process is a test of English and history. At Verma Law Firm, our immigration lawyer and team want to ensure that our clients are prepared for this test, which is why we are happy to offer you useful resources. There are 100 civics questions on the naturalization test, and the civics test covers important topics in U.S. history and government.

During the naturalization interview, applicants will be asked up to 10 questions from the list of 100 questions in English, in which applicants must answer correctly at least six (6) of the 10 questions to pass the civics test in English. To prepare applicants for U.S. citizenship and help support English language learning, USCIS now offers the civics test questions and answers for the naturalization test in a variety of languages.

This includes the following languages:

  • English
  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • Korean
  • Spanish
  • Tagalog
  • Vietnamese

How Does the Citizenship Test Work?

If an applicant qualifies for the 65/20 exemption, i.e. if an applicant is age 65 or older and has been a permanent resident for at least 20 years at the time of filing for naturalization, then s/he will be given special consideration regarding the civics requirement. The applicant will be asked 10 questions from a list of 20 specially designated civics questions from the usual list of 100 questions, and will be required to answer 6 out of 10 questions correctly. The qualifying applicant can also take the civics test in the language of his/her choice, using an interpreter.

Certain applicants, because of age and time as a permanent resident, are exempt from the English requirements for naturalization and may take the civics test in the language of their choice. See Exemptions and Special Consideration for Certain Naturalization Applicants
